Ruth Mitman,
founder and president of the Mitman Group, is a 50-plus market advisor with over
25 years of experience with the mature market. A Ph.D. graduate in Gerontology
and Education from Michigan State University, Dr. Mitman has a diverse
professional background in the fields of gerontology and education. She helps
companies increase their market share by understanding and speaking to older
customers better than their competitors, thereby increasing sales, improving
customer service and retaining hard-won clients.
The 50-plus market is both large and lucrative. It presents a huge
opportunity. Those over the age of 50 own more than three-fourths of all
assets and earn half of all discretionary income in the U.S. today. And yet,
this is an extremely diverse market, comprised of three distinct generations:
the GIs, the Silents and the Baby Boomers. Businesses often fail to appreciate
the complex dynamics of this three-tier group. For instance, staff members at
all levels of corporate life may assume inaccurate age-related stereotypes and
may communicate in inappropriate, ineffective and sometimes disastrous ways with
clients and customers, resulting in lost sales, lost customers and lost
profits.
Dr. Mitman helps companies:
Understand the three generations that comprise the
50-plus market
and how to meet their unique needs;
Avoid common misperceptions and age-related stereotypes that lead
to costly business mistakes and lost customers; and"
Understand the buying motivations and customer service
expectations
of older customers thereby increasing sales, enhancing customer
service and retaining hard-won clients.
Ruth has worked with companies such as The Hartford Financial Services Company,
Protective Life Insurance Company, UBS, Mass Mutual Financial Group, Chase
Credit Card Services, AARP, MIT Age Lab, LIMRA International, Adams & Knight
Advertising Inc, Wausau Benefits and the Episcopal Church Pension Fund.
Dr. Mitman is a member of the American Society on Aging, the National Council on
the Aging, the Society for Consumer Affairs Professionals in Business and the
American Society for Training and Development.
Ruth and her husband, John, live in West Hartford, Connecticut. They have two children
and four grandchildren.
