Although she did not summit, the undaunted desire to climb big mountains began in earnest. McKinley, and was part of the first successful women's ascent of Ama Dablan the 22,495-foot peak known as Nepal's
Matterhorn.

He and halfback Jim Kiick were affectionately known as "Butch

perfect 17-0-4 season in 1972. Csonka
earned the MVP award of the Dolphins' Super Bowl VIII victory over the
Minnesota Vikings by rushing 33 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns.

ART SHAMSKY
Art Shamsky began his professional baseball career as an 18-year-old
with the 1960 Geneva Reds and homered in his first at-bat. A
roommate of Pete Rose that year, Art hit .271 and had a slugging
percentage of .480. His homers were second in the league and well
ahead of Tony Perez and Dick Allen. Shamsky led the league's
outfielders in assists and he made the All-Star team. Art moved up
to the Topeka Reds the next year and hit .288, slugging .469 and
hitting 15 home runs. In '62, the young outfielder was with the
Macon Peaches and contributed 16 home runs and a .284 mark as he
remained consistent in his climb up the minor league ladder.

John Naber
At the 1976 Olympic Games in
Montreal, he captured four Gold Medals, one Silver, and broke four World
Records. His World marks in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke lasted an
amazing seven years after his retirement.
During his athletic career he won 25 National AAU titles, and won a record
10 NCAA individual titles (in 12 swims), while leading his team to four
undefeated seasons, and in 1977, he won the 1977 James E. Sullivan Award
as our Nation's Outstanding Amateur Athlete.
Diana Nyad
In 1979, Diana Nyad plunged into the history books by completing the longest
swim in history. The distance was 102.5 miles from the coast of Bimini to the
Florida shore. This incredible world record, the longest swim by a man or a
woman without the aid of a cage, still stands today. Diana was front page news
throughout the Western world, the lead story for Walter Cronkite on the CBS
Evening News, and many times guest of the Tonight Show. For ten years, Diana was
the greatest long-distance swimmer in the world. She broke numerous world
records, including the fifty-year-old mark for circling Manhattan Island, in
1975 (7 hours, 57 minutes).
Rudy Ruettiger
Against
all odds on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel "RUDY"
Ruettiger in twenty seven seconds, carved his name into history books as
perhaps the most famous graduate of the University of Notre Dame.
In
